Rabbit distress coyote calls are one of my favorite calls for predators. It is the most basic coyote call and I think it should be carried by every predator hunter. It is lightweight, very easy to use, and best of all it is inexpensive.
The object of this call is to produce a sound similar to that of a rabbit that has just been injured severely. The sound is controlled by how hard you blow and how you move your hand on then end of the call when you blow. The harder you blow, the louder and more squeal like the sound is. By holding your hand done and opportunity it as you blow produces a waaaa sound. It takes some practice but is easy to master. You can legitimately produce some lifelike sounds once you get the hang of it. There only bad thing about this call is the fact that you can use it improperly, which won’t bring in the coyotes. This is the upside to having a electronic caller.
Coyote
The proper way to use these coyote calls is in sequences. The first sequences should be about a wee long and should start out very intense. The rabbit has just been injured and he is legitimately going at it. As the sequences progresses on, your calling should come to be less intense. Once you have completed the first sequences, wait a concentrate minutes and do the same thing over again. This time you can even tone it down a wee bit more, as if the rabbit is losing strength. Once you unblemished a concentrate sequences, wait for 5 to 7 minutes, then do the same two sequences over again. Remember that what I say is not gospel, but it has been the most efficient for me. You have to experiment and find out what works for you. Also keep in mind that the coyote will be seeing directly at you so you have to be as still as you maybe can.
Your location should never be underestimated as well. I don’t know how many times I set up on the edge of a field and had a coyote come the woods behind. I ultimately learned that the coyotes normally come from the opposite side of human involvement. So if you know where a road or some kind of human presence has been, go to that side to call from. Don’t be discouraged if your coyote calls don’t work at first, they will eventually.
